Paintings of Jesus Christ

Intent

A very simple app for showing children official Latter-day Saint paintings of Jesus Christ during church. One painting fills the phone screen at a time. Swipe (or tap an edge) to go to the next or previous painting. A small title and artist sit in the corner and a tap hides them. Nothing else is on the screen. It installs like an app, keeps the screen awake, remembers where you left off, and keeps working when the church Wi-Fi does not.

A small palette icon by the caption opens a coloring section with official Church coloring pages of the Savior. Children swipe to pick a page, then tap spaces to fill them with color or draw with a brush. Undo, an eraser, and a clear button (it asks first) fix mistakes, and the share button saves the finished picture to the photo library. Each page's progress is saved on the device.

What it shows

  • 50 paintings from the Church's Gospel Media Library, in the order of the Savior's life: His birth and childhood, ministry, miracles, the Last Supper, Gethsemane, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, Christ in America, and the Second Coming. Artists include Harry Anderson, Del Parson, Ted Henninger, Robert T. Barrett, Simon Dewey, Walter Rane, Greg K. Olsen, J. Kirk Richards, John Scott, and others.
  • 17 coloring pages from the Media Library's Coloring Pages collections: the plan of Creation, the Nativity, His baptism, the Sermon on the Mount, Jairus's daughter, Christ with children, His visit to the Nephites, the First Vision, and the Second Coming.

The About page credits every image and links to its page on churchofjesuschrist.org.

How to use it

Open https://christ-paintings.kentcdodds.com/ on a phone or tablet. No sign-in.

  • Swipe left or right, or tap the left or right edge. Arrow keys work on a computer.
  • Tap the middle of the painting to hide or show the title.
  • Tap the palette icon for coloring pages, or the small circle for About.
  • Install it from the browser menu (Install app or Add to Home screen). After the first visit every painting and coloring page is saved on the device (about 15 MB), so it works offline. The About page shows the progress.

Done when

  • A painting fills the screen and swipes smoothly to the next one.
  • Coloring pages fill with color inside the lines, and progress is still there after closing the app.
  • With the phone offline, any painting or coloring page opens.

The images and their terms

The code is MIT licensed (see LICENSE). The paintings and coloring pages are not. They belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or the rights holders named on each image's Church page) and are used under the Church's Terms of Use. Those terms let individuals view, download, and post Gospel Media material for their own personal, noncommercial use, including use in a Church calling, unless an item says otherwise. The Media Library FAQ asks anyone who posts images to link back to them, which the About page does.

Images marked Church Use Only, Do Not Copy, or with other restrictions were left out. The app does not store copies of the images in its source. It loads each one from the Church's image server and lets the browser keep a copy for offline use.

Make your own copy

This package is public, so you can fork it on Kody and run your own.

  1. Fork it from its Kody package page. Your copy gets your own name, for example @you/christ-paintings.
  2. Publish it. Your app shows up at https://<you>.kody.run/christ-paintings/. No accounts, secrets, or settings needed.
  3. Record the version after each publish so the About page and the "Update available" card work. The exact call is in AGENTS.md.
  4. Point your own code link. The About page's "View this app on Kody" button uses CODE_URL in src/about-page.ts. Change it to your copy's page.
  5. Custom domain (optional). Make the app internet-visible in Kody and add the hostname. If your DNS is on Cloudflare, the @kentcdodds/cloudflare custom-domain helper does it in one step. Otherwise use the kody.run address.
  6. Share image (optional). Canonical and social preview links follow whatever address the app is opened at. The preview image shows christ-paintings.kentcdodds.com at the bottom; re-render it to show yours (see AGENTS.md).
  7. Keep to the Church's terms. Your copy uses the same images under the same terms: personal and noncommercial, with credit and links back.

To add or swap images, follow the image rules in AGENTS.md. Never invent a title or artist.
